Dr Janet Rose BA (Hons), MA, PhD, PGCE, FHEA - Principal

Dr Janet Rose, Principal of Norland, has had a distinguished career in higher education and early years education, training and provision both nationally and internationally. Before joining Norland, she was a Reader in Education and an Associate Professor. She has an established track record of senior leadership in higher education, leading large degree programmes in early years education and early childhood, as well as MA and doctoral degrees, alongside early years teacher training. She is the recipient of two ‘Outstanding Teaching’ student awards and has a national profile as an early years expert.

Janet is frequently invited to be a keynote speaker at national conferences, including the National Day Nurseries Association Conference and the International Nanny Organisation, and has presented research at both the House of Lords and House of Commons. Janet is the author of numerous academic publications, including three key texts that she co-authored – The Role of the Adult in Early Years Settings, Health and Well-being in Early Childhood and Emotion Coaching with Children and Young People.

Janet is also a Board Member of Independent HE, on the Education Committee of the Royal Academy of Dance, a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, a Trustee of First Steps Bath and a co-founder of Emotion Coaching UK. In addition, Janet currently has a Fellowship with the Early Relational Health programme at the University of Massachusetts in America.

  • May 2023 - International Nanny Conference

    Dr Rose will lead two practical workshops at the conference which will be held in Florida and hosted by the International Nanny Association. One will focus on self-regulation and how nannies can help young children to develop self-regulation. The second will introduce Emotion Coaching to support young children’s wellbeing and behaviour.

  • 10/12/2022 - Bright Start International Conference

    Dr Janet Rose will deliver two workshops at the Bright Start International Conference in December 2022. The conference will be held in Athens with speakers, such as Janet, delivering workshops virtually. One session will look at self-regulation and emotionally friendly spaces in the early years and the second workshop will explore emotion coaching.

  • - Attachment webinar

    Dr Janet Rose will be delivering a webinar for the Association for Child and Adolescent Mental Health. The webinar will provide an introduction to attachment and its relevance to educational contexts.

  • 15/11/2022 - Training for Bath and North East Somerset early years professionals

    Dr Janet Rose will be delivering a talk on self-regulation, emotional friendly spaces and emotion coaching to teachers, teaching assistants, private nurseries, childminders and pre-schools within Bath and North East Somerset.

  • 08/11/2022 - National Secondary Leaders Network

    Dr Janet Rose will be speaking at the National Secondary Leaders Network (NSLN) event based on inclusion on Tuesday 8 November at St Mary Magdalene Academy, London. Dr Rose will be discussing what research says about the impact trauma-informed practice has on children and young people

    Dr Janet Rose and Dr Louise Gilbert for JKP's Facebook Live during Children's Mental Health Week on 10 February, 6pm GMT. They will discuss how emotion coaching can be used by early years practitioners to help children self-regulate their behaviours and improve their mental health and wellbeing.

    Dr Janet Rose will deliver a keynote speech which will outline how emotion coaching might support vulnerable and traumatised children, particularly in relation to the impact of coronavirus on their lives.

    Dr Janet Rose will deliver a keynote speech on the topic ‘What I wish I had known as an early career teacher’ at the ‘Building your teacher toolkit: effective classroom practice’.

    The events form the Education Development Trust’s early career professional development programme spring term training.

    This is part of the roll out of the Department for Education’s Early Career Framework and the programme supports both early career teachers and their mentors through the first two terms of the profession.
