What is a student placement?

Norland students spend around half of their training gaining practical experience in a variety of early years settings, including family environments for both daily and residential placements.

Daily placement
We’re looking for families living in Bath with children under the age of two who are at home full-time rather than in any other childcare provision. You should be able to host a Norland student for eight hours a day, Monday to Thursday for set weeks potentially starting from September or over the academic year. You will need to support and guide the student with their practice and host a visit from the placement team.

We’re currently appealing for families to host Norland students on daily placement for the 2023-24 academic year. If you’d like to find out more, please contact the placement team

Families with multiples
We’re looking for families in Bath with multiples for daily placements, as detailed above, or within an hour’s drive of Bath if you have accommodation.

Residential placement
For Norland students to gain valuable experience of living in with a family, we’re looking for families with two or more children that have a SW postcode or within an 45-minute drive of the Bath area. One child will need to be under the age of two at the start of the placement with the other under the age of five and the family will need a primary carer at home full-time. The students will do eleven hours per day, Monday to Thursday, with slightly reduced hours on a Friday. The next residential placements will take place in February and May/June 2024.

Feedback from a placement family

“I have lost track of the number of times that I have recommended Norland to friends and colleagues since our student joined us on a placement. She has been absolutely unbelievable; her dedication is outstanding. The way that she approaches her work could not represent Norland any better. Her care and attention for our son is, at times, nearly indistinguishable from parental care. We’ve never thought twice about leaving our child with our Norland student; she constantly goes above and beyond and her poise and maturity give us complete reassurance. She has been a delight to work with.”
