Charity (Set 41) describes how she changed university and a lifetime focus on classical music to study early years at Norland, in order to pursue a career as a maternity nurse.
“Having spent the majority of my school years focused on music, it seemed self-evident that I would attend music college to train as a classical soprano opera singer. When I left school, I took two gap years to mature my voice and audition for a place at music college. I had not considered what I might do after university, but I always felt I would pursue a career that involved working with children. After my first year at the Royal Northern College of Music, I had a summer job nannying for a family near home in Yorkshire. I absolutely loved this job and slowly began to question whether I had chosen the right course to study.
“I have not for one second regretted my decision to study here. We cover such a wide range of modules as well as practical skills training, all of which can be put into practice whilst out on placement. … The close-knit community has been the perfect environment for me.”
“I was very hesitant to consider changing at first because I had spent so much time investing in my music education. With some guidance and encouragement from my family, I explored options in early years education. After reading about Norland (and watching a TV documentary about the college eight times), it was immediately clear that if I were to take the plunge and change courses, Norland would be the place to go. I have not for one second regretted my decision to study here. We cover such a wide range of modules as well as practical skills training, all of which can be put into practice whilst out on placement.

I wear the Norland uniform with pride and can’t imagine studying anywhere else. I feel confident that when it comes time to graduate, I will be fully equipped to pursue a successful career in maternity nursing.”
